The beautiful golden eagles are back at Wolftree!

Petra is already on the nest and is believed to have eggs. Hatch could occur first week of April!

Several of us watching the eagle nest tonight were almost sure we saw movement in the nest. And then, at about 7:47 p.m. nest time, the parent moved from the nest and a little white bobble head popped up. Things are looking good; the hatchling is very active. Then, to confirm what we were seeing, the parent pushed an eggshell out of the nest. !!!

Second hatch occurred yesterday around mid-afternoon. Yours truly commented on a second bobblehead; then an hour or so later, Petra was seen tossing out an eggshell.

Today, I watched a feeding and was pleased to see both chicks going assertively for food. There was a lot of bobbing around, so I don't know whether the chicks were just learning how to retrieve food from Mama's impressively huge beak or maybe there was a little beak-bonking going on. Neither one was going down for the count, so it looks good.

The golden eagle is another species that is prone to cainism, but Petra & Rocky fledged two last year and in years before that, so maybe there's nothing to the rumor. Or maybe Petra is a super-mom??

I guess I underestimated the strength of the dominant chick. Today, Petra is feeding only one chick, and apparently only one has survived. Bummer!
