I've been looking for some technical information regarding equipment specifications required for decent nest cam streaming videos. I'm running my first streaming camera and am not very impressed with the quality of the video as it appears online. The video feed from the camera itself looks far better. What should I be looking to upgrade in my system? Computer processor speed, camera quality or internet connection speed? I knowCornell uses equipment that is very high end with high definition cameras costing several thousand dollars each but I'm sure processors and internet speeds also affect the final results.
In my case I'm using a security camera system recording at 30 fps at 700 tvl. My internet connection is only 5MB/sec. I'm not sure of the processor speed on my computer at the moment but I'm thinking it is the weak link that is affecting the viewing quality currently.
Hello, and thanks for this post. Most of the posters who frequent this site are strictly amateurs when it comes to nest cams. Ralphthedog has installed trail cams in his yard with some interesting results. You might message him for information. The technology that has impressed me the most is provided by HDonTap. Their live streaming of the Savannah great horned owls, the Hanover bald eagles, and San Diego red-tailed hawks brought nest cams to a new level, in my opinion. Check them out at www.hdontap.com. Hi ExcisAc: I probably can't help you, I just use a couple HD trail cams with SD cards. I then transfer a video to my dropbox account so others can view them. To do a live cam is beyond my technical ability. Let us know if you get online so we can check out your site.
I'm using a Swann home security camera system which I found fairly easy to set up for live streaming. This system allows me to view the stream from my phone and after that it wasn't a big jump to live streaming. In checking out various hosting services I found Livestream to be the best that I have found mainly due to economical reasons. Ustream, HDonTap and YouTube also offer live streaming services. Ustream and HDonTap were significantly higher priced. I wasn't able to comprehend much of YouTube's informational page so I avoided using that option.
My concern with my current system is the marginal quality of the online video. I'd like to increase the quality buy I'm not sure where the weak point in my system lies. I think it's either the processor speed of the computer I'm using to stream the video or the speed of my internet connection.
Thanks for the info! I have added your nest cam to the Master Cams List - it's the only Merlin cam in the Falcon section. The cam may not be HD, but we can view Mama Merlin and her brood quite well! It will be fun to watch this little family. Thanks for sharing!
